5 Ways to Use Essential Oils During Cold and Flu Season

5 Ways to Use Essential Oils
During Cold and Flu Season

Our family's first fall head cold passed through our house this weekend and there has been no shortage of empty tissue boxes. Each time we find ourselves dealing with runny noses, plugged noses, sinus headaches, and overall fatigue, I'm reminded why I love Essential Oils so much. Not having to go through bottles of over the counter medicine filled with awful ingredients makes my heart very full.

Learning to manage head colds and sinus infections with Essential Oils is easier than you might imagine and very cost effective. The oils mentioned below are some of the most common and best priced oils out there. Most people, even those just starting out with Essential Oils, will have everything they need to manage cold and flu season.

Use the 5 simple strategies below to manage all of your family's cold and flu season needs!

1. Stop the Run with Lemon Oil

One of the most frustrating parts about having a head cold is dealing with the constant runny nose. Having a little one at home makes this chore even more challenging because they aren't always in the mood for blowing that extra mucous out. Convincing them that they will feel better afterwards doesn't seem to work. Lemon oil has so many applications and last year I learned about my new favorite way to use it. When your nose is running like a faucet, place 1-2 drops on lemon oil on the bridge of your nose and inhale deeply. This will provide you significant relief from that constant drip. Repeat as needed.

2. Decongest with Eucalyptus

Perhaps more frustrating than the runny nose is the congested one. This not only makes the day to day difficult to get through, it makes sleeping almost impossible. Eucalyptus offers a lot of relief from that plugged up feeling. During the day put 1-2 drops of eucalyptus on the bridge of your nose. Inhale deeply and often and repeat as needed. During the night place 15-20 drops in your diffuser. This will provide an all night relief that I personally can't live without anymore.

3. Relieve you Sinuses with Honey and Peppermint

Sometimes the sinus cavities get so packed that no amount of eucalyptus oil on the nose will even touch the congested feeling inside. Packed sinuses used to seem so difficult to manage but knowing a few tricks to relieve them can make all the difference. Place one drop of peppermint on each temple to alleviate that sinus headache and to really clear them out, add 3-4 drops of peppermint to a teaspoon of honey. Hold this mixture in the back of your throat until you start to feel relief in your sinuses. Be sure to use a high quality raw honey.

4.  Give Yourself an Energy Boost with GSD Essential Oil Roller Blend

That tired feeling caused by a head cold or sinus infection
makes
managing the simple day to day tasks a challenge. Going to work, cleaning the house, or running your children from here to there can wipe out the best of us. Coupled with not sleeping well, exhaustion really sets in after a few days on illness. The best way I've learned to get through those tiring slumps is by using Hello Apothecary's Get Stuff Done Essential Oil Roller Blend. Made with peppermint, lemon, and orange essential oils it smells amazing and provides a boost of energy to help you get through the day!

5.  Boost your Immune System with Tea Tree

Tea tree has so many uses and should be a staple oil in every home. There are several ways to use it to boost your immunity and you can learn more about its antibacterial properties in this blog post Top 10 Antibacterial Essential Oils. Use 20 drops of tea tree oil in a diffuser during the day or at night, take an aromatic bath by adding 15 drops in a cup of epsom salts, or add 5-6 drops into a tissue or handkerchief and inhale frequently throughout the day. Having a strong immunity is the best way to prevent of shorten the life of your cold.

Disclaimer: Always use high quality essential oils when using with children and please take the appropriate precautions to properly dilute them with a carrier oil.
