Bugs beware! I don't know about you but summer just isn't as fun with those pesky bugs swarming around. My daughter doesn't know yet how to swat them away and often ends up with bites all over her arms and legs. Luckily, I've come up with a few effective strategies for removing those annoying creatures.
Our backyard has a swampy area that I'm sure you can imagine creates a bit of a natural habitat for mosquitos and gnats alike. The more water we have, the more bugs that follow. Since we are typically in the yard and patio area instead of directly in the swamp, we've been able to plant some vegetation that helps curb their existence. Citronella, lavender, and peppermint are planted all around our home and our sitting areas in the yard. Not only do they smell amazing, they really do keep the bugs at bay. Citronella, in particular, is a wonderful plant to have nearby. Simply rub the leaves on your skin while sitting outside and you won't regret it. The smell is one of my favorites and the bugs really dislike it.
Since plants aren't easy to travel with, especially when planted directly in the ground, the next best solution is to create an all-natural bug spray using essential oils. This is great for camping, hiking, or visiting any location near the woods or buggy area. It's taken a few attempts to get this combination of oils correct but I think I've managed to get it exactly right and my whole family uses it frequently with great results.
Follow this easy step by step tutorial to manage the pesky bugs flying around.
Ingredients/Materials:
1 - 4 oz glass mister bottle
7 drops of peppermint oil
7 drops of eucalyptus oil
7 drops of rosemary oil
7 drops of lemongrass oil
7 drops of citronella oil
2 oz of water
2 oz witch hazel
Directions:
- Remove the lid and spray nozzle from your mister bottle.
- Add in 7 drops of each oil.
- Fill the remainder of the mister bottle with half water and half witch hazel, about 2 ounces each.
- Replace the spray nozzle and lid.
- Give a good shake and spray generously over your skin, hair, and clothes.
Notes:
- Make sure to use a glass bottle as some oils can leak into plastic.
- Some oils are photosensitive so using an amber or cobalt blue bottle preserves the quality of the oils over time.
- Shake before each use so all oils are mixed well before spraying.
- Avoid spraying on your children under the age of two and on your pets. Not all oils are safe for babies and animals.
I highly recommend taking the time to create this simple bug spray. It's natural, effective, and smells amazing! You won't regret having this oil blend handy during all of your spring, summer, and fall adventures!
